Critical illness cover is an insurance policy where an insurer is contracted to make a lump sum payment to you if you are diagnosed with a specific illness. These illnesses would usually include some types of cancer, a heart attack or stroke however there are generally many more illnesses that would be specified.

Each insurer has policies which specify what illnesses or conditions are covered, and therefore the quality of cover and monthly premiums can vary between each insurer. Within the same policy some insurers will even provide critical illness cover for your children, at a limited benefit amount and number of conditions.

Please contact us for further information on the differences between insurance providers, or to arrange a policy that suits your specific needs and/or budget.

Receiving a lump sum benefit in the event you (or your children with some insurers) suffered a critical illness could be beneficial for several reasons:

  • Allow you to take time off work to recover whilst assisting with ongoing bills and expenses
  • Help pay for any additional healthcare and/or medical expenses you may need
  • Repaying a debt (e.g. a mortgage or another debt)
  • Contribute towards additional childcare costs

We can help you to decide what features of covers might best suit your individual needs and circumstances, including the types of illnesses you’d prefer to be covered for, the amount of cover that might suit you best and for how long you might want cover to remain in place for.

We then compare the costs, features and benefits of the different critical illness policies available from the insurers we work with, to recommend a policy that we feel is suited to whats most important to you.

Assuming you’re happy with our recommendation, we then take care of the application and paperwork to the insurer for you. It is important that you provide accurate answers to the insurers questions about your current and past health details as this allows the insurer to more accurately carry out an informed risk assessment and decide on whether cover can be immediately offered or not. Not providing accurate details about your health and lifestyle at the time of application could jeopardise whether an insurer approves a claim in the future should you need to do so.

We hope you never have to claim, but if you do, this is typically a straightforward process as long as you can provide medical evidence in support your claim. Claims are typically assessed by insurers both sensitively and promptly. Once a claim has been approved, the insurer pays you (or those entitled to the benefit) the lump sum benefit amount you are covered for and your policy comes to an end.

The cost of critical illness cover depends on several factors including:

  • The amount of cover requested
  • The age that a policy starts and ends at
  • Past and present health and lifestyle details (whether you are a smoker, any past/present health issues or treatment etc)
  • Whether you opt for the amount of cover to remain the same, increase with inflation, or decrease over the period of cover

Premiums may be fixed/guaranteed over the term of cover, depending on your preference.
